The Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) Imo state council, has disclosed its plans to join the nationwide strike billed for June 7th, 2023.
The state council chairman, Comrade Ifeanyi Nwaguma, in a phone chat with our Correspondent, said that the council would definitely align with the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) on its proposed industrial action if there is no counter-directive from the federal Government towards reaching NLC’s demands.
Nwanguma admitted that the national President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Comrade Chris Isiguzo, has duly informed his council through a letter on the proposed nationwide strike billed for 7th of June.
He said, “we are actually waiting for signal from the Federal Government in meeting with the demands of the NLC from now till Tuesday night. Anything short of that, my council will be left with no option than to join in the industrial action.”
NLC had asked that the sudden removal of fuel subsidy by President Ahmed Bola Tinubu upon his assumption of office has subjected Nigerians to an untold hardship hence, should be stopped forthwith.
The Union, in a release signed by its National Secretary, Shuaibu Usman Leman, and issued on Saturday, admitted that the removal of fuel subsidy will free allocations which can be channelled to the provisions of infrastructure and creation of additional jobs, but its sudden removal, could however lead to social unrests and protests as people may perceive government as being insensitive to their plight.
The release reads further, “the Central Working Committee of NLC has noted with dismay the astronomical increase in the prices of petroleum products as high inflation which have drastically reduced the purchasing power of Nigerian citizens.
“On this note, members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, having considered the simple demands of the Nigeria Labour Congress in the removal of fuel subsidy, have unanimously adopted the position of the NLC in the issue and will align with it whole and entirely towards achieving success.
“Meanwhile, the CWC of NUJ directs all state Councils in the 36 states including FCT, to mobilize members to withdraw their services and commence a nationwide protest from Wednesday, 7th of June, 2023, if the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNCPL) refuses to reverse the new price regime in the sector on or before 12 midnight on Tuesday.
