The outgoing Rector, Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri, Engr. Dr. Michael Chidiebere Arimanwa, says his administration has recorded tremendous achievements in the institution ranging from infrastructures, ICT (Smart Campus Initiative), human capital development (employment), research and development, establishment of second campus at Ohaji/ Egbema, complex for school of management, remodeling of Fine Arts and Design Department, construction of roads, registry annex, establishment of fish farm, keeping the school status of being neatest polytechnic in the country, among others.
Arimanwa while having a valedictory interface with journalists at the Council Chamber of the school on Wednesday, said despite challenges, his efforts on Smart Campus Initiative had yielded good fruit as the school is now digitalized with e- library services, efficient electronic voting system with regards to Students Union Government, Head of Academic Departments and Deanship, Academic Board and Congregation Member into statutorily established Boards and Committees elections, efficient management of information and dissemination, effective conduct of meeting of the Council and Management, Academic Board and Committees, well coordinated e- learning and conduct of examinations in the Computer Based Test (CBT) centre of the campus, sustainable automated staff, students record keeping, deployment of 155MBPS from MTN through a Fiber Optic Link to the Network Operating Centre, deployment and installation of an Internet Protocol Camera across the campus for improved security system, among others.
The Rector who reiterated that his administration was able to manufacture electronic car which he stated was patented, palm kernel machine, added that a lot of infrastructure had been put in place to facilitate and encourage teaching and learning therein.
Arimanwa noted that the institution which is known for its academic excellence, saying the second campus of the Federal Polytechnic Nekede Owerri established at Abaezi in Ohaji/Egbema will start full academics in October 2023, hinting that FedPolyNek is a multi campus as facilities at the new campus are enough to accommodate and engage students.
According to Arimanwa, "this administration has broken grounds in expanding the Federal Polytechnic Nekede, which today is on its way to becoming a multi-campus institution. History was made on April 28, 2023, when Federal authorities led by the Ministries of Niger Delta and Education came to Abaezi Egbema to formally inaugurate the former Skill Acquisition Centre Egbema and hand it over to our institution. The facility is a built-up one with all the necessary learning and accommodation facilities of a 21st Century institution.
"Women Development. This administration has taken deliberate steps in enhancing women emancipation in the institution. Sponsored the first August Meeting in the Polytechnic, sponsored the first week of activities of the Federal Polytechnic Nekede Owerri Women Association, sponsored tens of female staff under the aegis of the Women in Technological Education and Development to an international conference in Harare Zimbabwe, Southern Africa in 2022, sponsored another set of female staff to an international conference in Accra Ghana in 2023 Legacy of Peace".
The Rector stressed that his administration has been single-minded in maintaining industrial peace in the institution as "peace is a necessary factor in enhancing the productivity of the staff. In keeping faith to our legacy of peace, we have ended the regime of victimization of staff, adopted evidence - based approach in disciplining staff, resorted to engagements in resolving issues, ended the era of inter-cartel frictions", among other achievements too numerous to outline here.
Observing that academics, extra curriculum activities, administration, technology, ICT, research and development have improved at the institution, Arimanwa
invites all persons to the convocation ceremony of the school billed to hold on Thursday, 7th September, 2023, on the campus.
