...Says he 'I'll redeem Imo
The governorship candidate of APGA in the November 11 2023 election in Imo State, Sir Tony Ejiogu, says he will leave no stone unturned in revamping the local government system in the state through period democratic election so the people who produce the wealth of the state would freely and directly benefit from government.
Ejiogu disclosed this cheering tidings during a rally at Aboh Mbaise and Ezinihitte Mbaise LGAs recently.
Promising to conduct free, fair and credible local government election on assumption of office, Ejiogu said he has the interest of the people at his heart hence he would not disappoint them.
He regretted that successive governors in the state had failed to conduct elections at the local level, thereby eroding democratic governance, promising to reverse the trend.
"Frequently overlooked, Nigeria’s local governments are disproportionately important. If they function well, they would be best positioned to meet people’s basic needs and to build their resilience to cope with everyday challenges. Across the grassroots, health services are inadequate, there is limited potable water, primary education is comatose, teachers are either not available or underpaid and there is a general absence of public infrastructure which should not be so", he said.
Ejiigu stressed that local government autonomy has been one of the campaign promises of APGA as he stated in his speech during his campaign flag-off in August, saying his administration would embark on various government reforms, which are key to achieving his five points agenda.
"We will plan and conduct free, fair and credible local government elections. Then we can improve the government's transparency and accountability and drive social justice and equality", adding that this would help to fill significant socio-economic gaps.
He posited that due to years of inefficiency and general lack of inactivity, Imo people have lost hope that the third tier of government can provide any sort of democratic dividends to them, but if voted as governor, this will change.
Speaking on his plans for security, Ejiogu gave an assurance that Imo would bounce back again, as his administration would create an enabling environment that is safe and secure for business and investment to flourish while workers and pensioners get paid as and when due.
Meanwhile, Ejiogu has promised to redeem Imo State by cushioning poverty and underdevelopment.
Ejiogu, who made the promise during a rally at Isiala Mbano Local Government Area, on Thursday, stated that he is very confident of victory at the November 11 2023 poll.
He stressed that he shall fulfill the yearnings and needs of Imo people when he becomes governor, positing that it is the turn of Owerri Senatorial Zone to produce the next governor of Imo State, saying the Charter of Equity must be respected by both Senatorial Zones of Imo State if political/economic marginalization or Owerri Zone must be halted.
"Egbu Declaration and Charter of Equity which Imo founding fathers unanimously promulgated must be respected. The state's founding fathers, after the return of democracy in 1998 propounded the Imo Charter of Equity to encourage peace, equity and fairness", Ejiogu said.
He decried that over the years the brotherly accord has not been honoured, maintaining that following the recent "Egbu Declaration against the injustice Owerri Zone has witnessed, it is time for all lovers of democracy, regardless of party affiliation, to join hands with APGA, asserting that he is the only credible, visionary and competent candidate to reposition the state when elected as governor.
When we went to Egbu "Declaration, we made it known that it is the turn of Owerri Zone to produce the next Imo Governor. Orlu has ruled for 20 years. Okigwe Zone ruled four years and Owerri Zone ruled only seven months. For equity and fairness, it is the time of Owerri Zone to produce the next Governor," Ejiogu observed.
Appreciating the love and support he enjoyed from the people of Isiala Mbano, Ejiogu promised to run an inclusive administration that would favour all the zones of the state and also encourage equal development.
"We have the genuine desire to bring about good governance for the betterment of Imo people. Power is now in your hands to change the trajectory of your future and indeed the future of our dear state. Vote for APGA."
The traditional ruler of Amato Amaraku autonomous community, Eze Joseph Mbamara, who extolled Sir Tony Ejiogu for the visit, also prayed that God who has seen his heart will bless his intentions.
Several members of the community expressed delight about the APGA candidate’s visit, as they promised to vote for him during the election.
