The Managing Director and CEO of Imo State Water and Sewerage Corporation (ISWSC), Engr Emeka Celestine Ugoanyanwu has commended one of the staff of the agency, Mr Christopher Ononukwe for writing, publishing and launching of his 18th book Fundamentals of Government: A Complete Guide for Schools & Colleges.
At the Corporation's Conference Hall, Engr. Ugoanyanwu, on Saturday 14 October 2023, expressed confidence in the author Mr. Christopher Ononukwe for his pragmatic and systematic approach in handling his job as Communications Desk Officer for the Corporation.
In his words, “It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to this great scholarly event to launch the book Fundamentals of Government: A Complete Guide for Schools & Colleges authored by our own Christopher Ononukwe. I would like to greet the book Chief Launcher Hon Chigozie Nwaneri Chief Whip of Imo State House of Assembly and Member Representing Oru East in Imo State House of Assembly and other co-launchers for finding time to grace this occasion.
“Ladies and gentlemen, as you probably know, this book is Christopher's 18th book which makes him a prolific author and let our children see him as a role model as it used to be in the past because the only way to meet up with the current national demand is through sound knowledge and it can only come by extensive reading and learning culture.
“It is generally said that to hide secrets from Nigerians put the information in a book. We are here not only to encourage Christopher but to change that narrative, We therefore enjoin you all to pick copies of this book for our own wards, friends and schools in various communities," Engr. Ugoanyanwu said.
In his speech, the book reviewer who also authored the foreword of Mr Ononukwe's 18th book, Barr. Abdul Mahmud, a renowned constitutional and human rights lawyer based in Abuja, said that the book by contexts and analysis remains the best guide to the citizens daily life as the author Mr. Christopher Ononukwe has brought to bear the rudiments and fundamentals of government, institutions and history in a simple style with a indepth treatment. He therefore encouraged the use of the book for the secondary schools and tertiary institution across Nigeria and beyond.
In their separate remarks, Dr. Sam Nwagbo (a guest speaker and political scientist who was represented by Mr Chukwuma Owuamanam, a lecturer from FUTO), Hon. Nyerere Ogbonna (former IMC Chairman of Oru East LGA and now SA on the Governor on Door to Door/Sensitization), Hon Chiagozie Nwaneri (Chief Whip of Imo State House of Assembly and chief launcher of book represented by Comr Noble), Chief Romanus Egbuladile (former National Welfare Secretary of APC), Dr Chieme Chukwudoruo), described Mr. Ononukwe as Chinua Achebe in Oru East Local Government Area of Imo State as he remains a source of encouragement to other youths in Nigeria. They acknowledged the quality of the book in its content and form, promising to encourage the author more by ensuring that his prolific and painstakingly work is advertised for the interest of the Imo reading public, mostly students of secondary and post-secondary schools in the state.
Responding, Mr. Ononukwe said that he was overwhelmed by the speeches and support of the participants and other well wishers who could not make it to the event for some inevitable reasons. He appreciated those who positively contributed and ensured that the 319-page book in 19 chapters is published. He said the book is not to compete with any book but to fill a gap in knowledge, adding that “In Nigeria today, there is no single comprehensive textbook to occupy the gap in the study of government of politics. I have made this work not as a replacement but as a supplementary resource material that will offer a guide to the readers.
Mr Ononukwe further recounted how he started the writing the book on 2006 and the serious cahlleges he faced from fraudulent publishers. He therefore noted that the book covers the selected topics outlined in the new syllabuses of the NERDC, WAEC, NABTEB, UTME and other foreign examination bodies. While writing this book, I have consulted over 20 books and scholarly papers, some of which are acknowledged in my textbook."
The high point of the event was the participants' photo group session with the author. Among the participating schools that witnessed the event were Rochas Foundation College, Imo Government Girls' Secondary School, Baptist Int'l High School, and Holy Ghost College, all in Owerri. Former Commissioner in the service of Imo State Judicial Service Commission Hon (Dr) Nelson Ezerioha, Esq, briefly attended the event.
