The adage " honour is given to whom honour is due " played out recently as a respected traditional ruler from Ogbunka , in Orumba South Local Government Area Of Anambra State , Dr. Chinedum Eziekiel Ofomata (Ebekuodike Na Ogbunka ) , bagged a Life Achievement Award .
The award ceremony which took place in the capital city of Owerri during the United Nations International Mother's Tongue Day Celebration with the theme " preventing endangered languages from death (a case of Igbo language ) was organized by Igbo Women Assembly , to showcase the rich cultural heritage of the Igbo nation , and appreciate deserving sons and daughters of Igboland .
Briefing newsmen immidiately after the well attended event , Dr. Ofomata , an Author, Publisher , who also doubles as the National Chairman , Association for the Survival of Igbo Language and Culture , expressed happiness on the turnout of events , he described the award as a source of strength , progress and motivation to him .
Speaking on the significance of the United Nations International Mother's Tongue Day Celebration , he unequivocally stated that it signifies a Clarion call to all Igbos , that charity begins at home , he said the event also serves as a unifying factor , he reteriated that with Language you know your brothers . he urged Igbos to go back to their roots in order to restore their dignity , he said ". The Igboman should go back to his root , to have identity and restore the dignity of the Igbos , find your root and base , somebody without culture , language and root does not have identity " Dr Ofomata expressed.
Dr Ofomata , who was conferred with his first chieftaincy title in January 1999 by the traditional ruler of Ogbunka Town due to his tireless efforts in the propagation of the Igbo language and culture , seized the platform to commend the members of Igbo Women Assembly for the event and for honouring him.while pledging his support for the association. Dr. ofomata also have three other Chieftaincy titles to his credit .
In her speech the Chairperson of Igbo Women Assembly (IWA) , Dr. Ebele Eucharia Okafor , enjoined Igbos to continue promoting and preserving their mother tongue .
The day also witnessed beehives of activities viz; Good Will messages , drama , cultural dance steps , panel session amidst funfare and jubilations. Encomiums has been pouring in .
