In a bold move aimed at revitalizing Imo State's agricultural sector, Honorable Barr Ted Chisom Ojukwu, representing Nkwerre State constituency in the Imo State House of Assembly, has moved a motion urging the state government, under the leadership of His Excellency, Senator Hope Uzodinma, to prioritize agriculture as a means to boost the economy and increase food reserves.

During a recent plenary session, Honorable Ojukwu emphasized the pivotal role agriculture plays in ensuring food security, providing livelihoods, and contributing to economic growth. He lamented the decline in interest and investment in agriculture, highlighting the stark contrast from a time when primary and secondary schools in the state boasted demonstration farms and a populace actively engaged in farming activities.

The lawmaker underscored the urgent need for intervention, citing the escalating costs of goods due to reliance on imports from other states, which adversely impacts the people of Imo State. He warned of dire consequences, including famine, disease, and societal collapse, should agriculture continue to be neglected.

In response to these challenges, Honorable Ojukwu proposed a series of actionable measures. Firstly, he called for the immediate reinstatement of demonstration farms in schools to reignite interest in agriculture among students. Additionally, he urged the Ministry of Agriculture to collaborate with local farmers to enhance farming practices and provide essential support such as grants, seedlings, and manure.

Furthermore, the motion advocated for the reactivation of the Imo Marketing Board to facilitate the storage and distribution of food items, thereby bolstering the state's food reserves and alleviating the suffering of its residents. Honorable Ojukwu also emphasized the importance of leveraging existing resources, including rubber plantations and the Avutu Poultry in Obowo, to stimulate employment and generate revenue for the state.

In conclusion, the lawmaker's motion serves as a clarion call to the Imo State Government to prioritize agriculture as a catalyst for economic development and social well-being. By heeding this call and implementing the proposed measures, Imo State has the opportunity to reclaim its position as a powerhouse in agricultural production, ensuring a prosperous future for its citizens.
