Sen Athan Achonu, the labour candidate for the Imo state November 11 guber election has said he has already set motion in progress to address the lingering Imo security issue.
Sen Achonu said this while interacting with journalists in Abuja ahead of his campaign flag off on Wednesday in Owerri the state capital.
Sen Achonu said it is unfortunate that the state has been under the siege of gun men who kill, maim and destroy properties unchecked.
He said he is saddened by the fact that Imo is presently under a government that has watched it's citizens killed in their thousands without doing anything to stop and checkmate the mayhem.
On this note, he said he will not want to govern a state that will remain in the clutches of gunmen who have already made the state very unsafe and also reduced the tourism potentials of the state.
To this effect, he said he has opted to rebuild all the destroyed police stations in his Okigwe zone starting with the Area command in Orie Agu with personal resources.
Sen Achonu said he also requested the Inspector General of police to make available some Armoured personnel carriers, APCs to him and was given ten to repair.
The distinguished former senator said he approached Innoson limited for repairs of the 10 APCs adding that Innoson charged him 180 million Naira to repair nine out of the ten.
He said the chairman of Innoson, Chief Innocent Chukwuma assisted him with twenty million Naira as part of his own contribution to the project while he paid the sum.of 100 million Naira to the company as first installment.
Sen Achonu further said Innoson first repaired six APCs out of the nine adding that he was unfortunately given one as the police claimed they did not have enough drivers.
This is one of the efforts he said he has made as regards securing the state adding that he has also acquired houses to relocate the police stations around him in addition to purchasing lands for the construction of fresh police stations especially after the area command he rebuilt was dynamited again by the gunmen.
He said he is currently calling on well to do individuals from the neighbouring Ihitte Uboma local government area to assist him in this task.
Sen Achonu said he will on inauguration as governor create vigilante groups that will work with their individual local government police divisions to assist in crime prevention and control
He added that he scores the present government zero in security as he said the government has done practically nothing to stop the killing of its people.
Sen Achonu said the government has failed in its first job mandate which is protection of lives and property adding that it is rather too late for the government to address these issues now.
He further assured that he is coming to change the narratives and will bring back the old Imo with all of its potentials to Imo indigenes.
