The Coordinator of Imo State Council of Town Unions President-Generals,Hon. Kingsley Chigozie Omuruka has commended Operatives of Nigeria Police Force for averting clash between members of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC and supporters of Labour Party,LP Governorship Candidate, Senator Athan Achonu during Anglican Synod held at Obibiezenna in Owerri North Council Area of the State on Sunday 5th November,2023.
It would be recalled that the incident according to eyewitnesses occurred during Church service where those loyal to the Labour Party Candidate allegedly tore campaign posters of Governor Hope Uzodimma who is seeking for re-election under the platform of All Progressives Congress, APC come Saturday November 11th,2023. The story has it that the Operatives of the Imo State Police Command quickly intervene when supporters of Governor Hope Uzodimma were about to clash with the opposition party members. While it was gathered that the LP Candidate,Senator Athan Achonu instead of approaching the matter with patriotism decided to instigate further violence even in the presence of the Police, he went as far as mobilizing thugs who came in large numbers on motorcycles holding various weapons.
It took the concerted effort of the Police to disperse them and restore peace in the area, contrary to the claims of Athan Achonu and his Labour Party, governor Hope Uzodimma was never at the scene of the event. and he didn’t order any security personnel to apprehend anyone, the Police were just doing their job as saddled by the constitution.
Meanwhile, the community dwellers were said to have lauded the Police for the professionalism displayed in managing the situation.
Speaking to newsmen on Tuesday 7th November,2023,Hon. Omuruka joined other well-meaning Imo residents to commend tactical units of Imo State Police Command for their concerted efforts in curbing crime condemning name dropping by some desperate politicians. "I wonder why someone will be dropping name of the Commander of Tiger Base,Ola as the person behind his ordeal. Politics is not a do or die affair. Let's learn how to imbibe spirit of sportsmanship. Senator Athan Achonu should stop heating the polity. He embrace peace. Imo State belongs to all of us. Election will come and go, while Imo remains. We,the President-Generals of the Town Unions in Imo State have been promoting peace in the grassroots.
And we are ever ready to ensure that Imo is crime free",he stated.
